Zirtual's bankruptcy in 2015 and subsequent acquisition gets flagged in Reddit threads. The current operation under Startups.com is stable. We verified this in our Q1 2026 testing.
Zirtual has a complicated history. In 2015, they abruptly shut down and left hundreds of clients without service and thousands of VAs without paychecks — a story that still surfaces in Reddit threads when anyone asks about “is Zirtual legit.” The short answer: they were acquired by Startups.com (formerly Launchpad) and have operated stably since. The 2015 closure is relevant history, not current risk.
We tested Zirtual for 45 days starting January 2026. Here’s what we found.
Bottom line: Zirtual lands between Time Etc and Belay on both price and quality. If Time Etc is slightly too light and Belay is too expensive or too slow, Zirtual is the honest middle option. VA quality is consistent, the 48-hour matching is real, and the US-based EA model works.
[realism check] Typical month-1 outcome: 6–10 hours/week recovered with proper SOP onboarding. The 12-hour minimum tier is genuinely too thin for most operators — plan for the 24-hour tier ($849/mo) as your real entry point.
Pricing reality
Zirtual publishes their pricing:
- 12 hours/mo: $549/mo ($45.75/hr)
- 24 hours/mo: $849/mo ($35.38/hr)
- 36 hours/mo: $1,099/mo ($30.53/hr)
- 50 hours/mo: $1,499/mo ($29.98/hr)
No rollover. Hours expire monthly, same as Belay. No setup fee.
The per-hour rate at the 24-hour tier ($35.38) is competitive with Time Etc’s 20-hour tier ($35/hr) and notably cheaper than Belay ($45/hr). The 50-hour tier at $29.98/hr is genuinely good value for high-volume operators.
Onboarding: what we experienced
Day 1: Signed up online. Account setup took 20 minutes.
Day 2: Matched to a VA. This is faster than the advertised “1 business day” — we were genuinely impressed.
Day 3: Kickoff call. VA was US-based, professional, and had reviewed our intake brief.
Week 1: First tasks completed. Email drafting was good; calendar management was excellent. One task (research summary) was slightly surface-level — improved after one round of feedback.
Month 2: Running smoothly. No VA replacement needed. (We’ve seen reports of VA churn being an issue for some Zirtual clients; we didn’t experience it, but it’s worth monitoring.)
The bankruptcy question: answered
The 2015 Zirtual shutdown happened because the company misclassified contractors as W-2 employees without the cash reserves to cover it. When they reclassified, the payroll hit was larger than the company could absorb overnight.
Startups.com acquired the brand and client base and rebuilt on a contractor model. The 2025 operation has SHRM-compliant hiring, a proper replacement policy, and client reviews that don’t have “they disappeared overnight” in them. The historical risk is historical.
Who Zirtual is actually right for
Zirtual is a fit if:
- You want US-based dedicated EA support at a mid-tier price ($849–$1,399/mo)
- You need faster matching than Belay (2 days vs 3 weeks)
- Your hours are consistent month-to-month (no rollover means variable months hurt you)
- You’re comparing against Time Etc and want slightly higher consistency
Zirtual is not a fit if:
- You need to build up hours or have variable months (no rollover)
- You need offshore pricing (Wishup at $999/mo for 80 hours is a better structure)
- Your work is one-off tasks only (Fancy Hands is cheaper for that)
Compare against alternatives

Verdict
Zirtual has earned back its reputation since the 2015 incident. For the US-based dedicated EA category, it’s a legitimate option at a better price than Belay with faster matching than both Belay and Time Etc.
Score: 7.4/10. Points lost for the no-rollover policy and historical context that still requires disclaiming.
